Need ideas for different ways to "rule" a country.

I'm designing an RPG, and a major part in the story will be to assassinate (I might be able to think of a non-violent way to do it also...) your country's president (or king, or council or... etc..) Setting: Planet similiar to earth, and a little more technically advanced than our world. This is a very basic sketch I've drawn (in MS Paint!!) The map of the country and bordering countries What I want is: Country 1 and 2 are very different, politically, which means that they are hardly communicating at all. Your Country has managed to be somewhat neutral, and therefore is very rich and quite advanced (because of trade with both countries). This has worked fine for 50 years (or so), but now one of the other countries' ruler(s) has decided that your country is far too valuable to be let alone.... I have discussed different ways to rule with friends, and this is what we've come up with: (also important: no country should be "evil" in any way... they just see and run things very differently) Communism VS Capitalism - Old and classic, but not necessarily boring and there's still a lot to be said. Emotional VS "Cold Logic" (ie. one country is ruled based on the people's emotions, while the other country does exactly what is the rational thing to do (like Vulcans in Star Trek) Complete democracy VS Dictatorship (ie. in one country, everybody has a vote in every law change, tax change etc, while the other country is ruled by one single person (with the help of a council I guess... but I'm reluctant to use this because I don't believe in democracy to that degree, but I believe that dictatorships can be a "better" way to rule a country, so I don't know if I could create such a world) Computer-controlled VS ? (One computer calculates the best way to run a country. Of course it would have to use one of the above as a guideline I guess..) Monarchy VS ? (which is basically inherited dictatorship, with both benifits and... bad things ) Any more ideas? I also toyed with the idea to use different races instead, like a catrace VS dograce (both standing on two legs).. But I'm not sure about that yet. Of course, having more races can be used even though one of the other, political ways are chosen. I hope I've explained what I'm looking for... Well, you may get away with making the two countries not that different - just choose a system where personal ambition has a great influence in history, causing both countries to have engaged in wars over the years (monarchy may be great for this - get a new young ambitious king to have taken the throne recently and you also get a justification for the change in attitude of the country towards the smaller one).

If you really want to make them different, nothing beats religion - it might make it hard to explain the existence (and/or neutrality) of the smaller country though.

You know, I never wanted to be a programmer...

haha true

and it shouldn't have to be that big of a problem...

One country could be extremely religious, and the other one is ruled by a computer...

Your country could be... well, run by humans, in a non-extreme kind of way.
It would allow any religion, and since it's technologically advanced - both countries can tolerate it.

Not bad..

well you can have in one side of the ring the ones who believe that they have come from an alien, and their main project it's to clone people to get to the pure state of the original specie -- this ones got good techology and a clone army

in the other side we have those o believe i a far supperior god, they must practice good and spread his word, they believe the holy war is yet to come and that the judgement day is near -- this ones army is stronger cause they believe in what their doing, they have the power of ressurection

whe (you) are the renegates those from one of the other who are not that fanatic about it, they never messed up with us because they thought we were inferior to them...

...........they were wrong!!!!

not bad for a 5 minutes thinking

PS: oh and any similarity with reality is pure coincidence (how do i spell this???)

To be considered a genius you just have to say what everybody knows in a way very few understand
well you can have in one side of the ring the ones who believe that they have come from an alien

haha that's pretty cool actually... But I wonder what kind of effect that would have.. I doubt cloning is going to help, and there won't be any big battles or anything, so armies aren't that interesting.

And I'm pretty sure the Magic part has been ditched, no hokus-pokus in this game... so no resurrection

PS: oh and any similarity with reality is pure coincidence (how do i spell this???)

just like that

matriarchy vs. patriarchy
feudal military hierarchy with slaveholding vs. socialist egalitarian passive resisting hippies.

I want to help design a "sandpark" MMO. Optional interactive story with quests and deeply characterized NPCs, plus sandbox elements like player-craftable housing and lots of other crafting. If you are starting a design of this type, please PM me. I also love pet-breeding games.

ROFL!!

(had to look up what patriarchy and matriarchy meant )

matriarchy n : a form of social organization in which a female is the family head and title is traced through the female line [syn: {matriarchate}]

patriarchy n : a form of social organization in which a male is the family head and title is traced through the male line [syn: {patriarchate}]

As a passive male I take offense to that.

Not really

A communistic "common good" versus a capitalistic "people get what they deserve" is good, and so is the religion vs technology thing. But how about this, expansionism versus perfectionism.

Country 1 is always trying to expand. It has programs to encourage life and save every possible life, and it trades for lots and lots of raw materials and low quality resources. Naturally this is the country that would decide yours is too valuable to leave alone.

Country 2 is always trying to be perfect. It won''t even think of buying any goods unless they are of the utmost quality. Rather than breed and breed and try to save every life, they take great care before having children to screen out any possible genetic problems. Oh yeah, they are pro choice too

Your country is a balance between the two. You might buy low grade steel from country 1 to build the unimportant things and high grade steel from country 2 to build the important stuff. You might sell the natural gas to country 2 and coal to country 1, etc. Well anyway, just another idea to put on the table.

Super Mutants vs. Purists

Fanatics that believe tech == evil vs. Androids ruled by the one ( a human brain in which lies the origins of their intelligence)

science vs. religion (thats against science)

Passive/peaceful vs. Aggressive/warmongererererers

edjucated society vs. controled unedjucated society

law and order vs. more of an anarchist society

personally I think super sweet androids vs. the psycodic anti-tech fanatics would be cool.

Thanks!

My girlfriend suggested

People who like nature (like indians for example) VS Expansionists/Exploiters that use every natural resource to produce technological stuff...
