I think Xaudio seems much neater than BASS, somehow, well the name is cooler at least hehe 
. It''s free too, unlike BASS (?), even for commercial applications(!!). Or FMOD...
Xaudio is also supported under a load of different operating systems and processor architectures. Windows, Windows CE, Linux, BeOS, FreeBSD, Solaris, Digital Unix, MacOS, HP/UX etc.
