Midnight Run

[ Last Masquerade (mp3) ]

In the story:

What if the gateways could not transport everyone to the Moon?

The Earth had been in darkness for years. Most people were in
a suspended state waiting to be transported. During an opening
between the blizzards, the moth girl came to free the gate for
the people from those that tempered with fate and seized it.

She came alone against armaments enough to level cities. Their
searchlights were her guide. Shadows on the frozen highrises her
comrades. Memories were her wings. The heavy cloud covered
the sky. The storm muffled the sounds. The snow buried the
witnesses.

In the story:

Crista is a daughter of the family that owns the mining corp on the Moon, where she helped her father as an logistics strategist. In her free time goes to a inventions forum to chat under the nick Bluejay. There she found a member that posting about antique technologies and got interested. It reminded her of her grandfather that always talked about Earth and traditional values.

Two generations ago, the family was a major player in the construction of the gateways to leave Earth. The family still hold powerful positions on the Moon.

Worcester met Crista three times.

The first time was at the forum, where Worcester was posting about some old machines and looking for ways to upgrade them. There he met Crista as Bluejay. Bluejay was also interested in old stuff and the two became friends, although Worcester hid the fact that he was on Earth from Bluejay. Bluejay just assume that Worcester also had a junkyard of old equipment like her family, except that Worcester's were even older.

The second time was when the restoration mission had started. Worcester relaying surveillance data to the logistists on the Moon. Crista was one of them. The communication was formal and only the positions and last names were used. The plans go back and forth several times for corrections before they become practical, and sometimes unforeseen factors render the plan useless. It was a frustrating process and they are many argumentative exchanges. Sometimes Crista just didn't believe what Worcester was telling her.

Worcester thought that there must be a better way, so he rigged the channel to let the copernicus people just see the situation for themselves. At first, Crista would order him around (using text) to look at things that he had told her a million times. It was irritating but Worcester held his temper because it was nonetheless it is his boss on the other end. Crista saw Worcester in some reflections and realized that she had been talking to a cute guy. Worcester didn't know about it. He just thought that the boss became more understanding after being able to see the situation. That night, Worcester when on the forum and told Bluejay about the headset, and asked Bluejay whether BJ wanted to see the workshop. BJ realized that they were the same person. Since it was obvious that Worcester was not on the Moon, Worcester revealed to BJ that he was actually on the Albatross. He said that he didn't tell BJ before because it was never a popular place to be among his friends. After saying this, Worcester got no reply. Was BJ really angry at him?

Crista was overwhelmed by the news and decided to tell Worcester the truth also. She told him who she was. Worcester was shocked and shocked (literally), and the shock broke the headset.

And more trouble follows.
Crouton

In the Story:

Captain Crouton is Responsible, conservative, fair, careful, and strict.

Little is known to the crew about the personal life of the Captain.
In rare occasions, Crouton could be seen reading. Otherwise, Crouton
is mostly seen with Parmesa, talking about the mission.

In her freetime Parmesa would have tea and walk in the gardens. She
had been living in the Albatross ever since it was completed. The
Albatross was literally her home. In her mind the Albatross is a
friend she grew up with. At times, she felt the Albatross as a bigger
brother that protects her. At other times the Albatross was like a
little brother that needs to be cared.

Crouton sees the Albatross as a huge responsibility. It is an important,
expensive and delicate vessel that cannot get a scratch.

Parmesa needs to tell him sometimes that the Albatross can take some
beating. Albatross has what it takes to be very tough in the right
hands. The Albatross is not just a survivor. It is a Guardian.

Parmesa just knows it.

Re:

Those sprites stayed for pretty long. It reminded me that most of them had change from the very first design. Among the changes were Albatross, Olivia, LeMon, Worcester, and Allisa.

Swimming

[ Romaina (Image) ]

In the story:

o All flight crew members can swim
o Swimming is not common on the Moon
o Part of flight training was simulated in water
o Albatross had several ponds and streams
o Among the flight crew, Romaina is the best swimmer
o Worcester learned how to swim in the Albatross
o Parmesa doesn't like being in water.
o Olivia, Allisa and Crista will learn how to swim while on Earth

o Granola knows that when Romaina is happy she goes swimming.

Albatross does not have standard swimming pools. The closest thing to
a swimming pool is in the water docking area where water vehicles are
stored. Albatross has ponds in the outer habitat ring. Those are part
of the greenhouse circulation system, surrounded by trees. In the
lower part there is a hot pond. That pond is too hot for swimming.

When Sapphirina saw the pond by the trees, she suggested to the others
to swim there together. But no one took it seriously because no one
knew whether it was appropriate. She brought it up a few times but no
one would go.

One night Romaina was in a particularly depressing mood and wandered
by the pond. First she stared at it. Then she felt it with her hand.
Then with her feet. The she waded toward the deeper center...

Parmesa sleeps pretty late too and discovered Romaina in the pond. She
said that she was glad someone found the real purpose of the ponds.

Parmesa walked on thinking how she had not overcome the fear of water.
In all these years, there are still things about the Albatross that
she was afraid to learn.

The next day Sapphirina talked about going again. And so they went.
It spreaded and became a flight crew custom.
Food

[ Bread? (Image) ]

In the story:
o There is no bread on the Moon. Artisan bread-making is an extinct art.
o The Little Red Riding Hood is the avatar holder of artisan bread-making.
o Avatars don't grow.
Olivia

[ Pillow (Image) ]

In the story:
o The normal way out of the room is through the door.
Ghost Fleet
