VIM - question about netrw

It's not necessarily programming, but many people use VIM for programming, so I'll ask this here. When I create a file from the terminal (or within netrw itself), and browse the directory of that file within netrw, the filename appears white. However, if I transfer that file to a windows FAT32 partition, and then back to my linux ext4 partition, the filename turns purple with a cyan asterisk after it. Why the change of color, and why the asterisk? It's weird seeing my files have a "been on FAT32" mark.

Doesn't that just imply that the transfer to FAT32 set the executable bit on the file? ls -l to check the permissions on your purple files...
