Getting music into a game

I am using DirectX, VC6 etc. and would like to get music into my game. The obvious way to go would be MP3 in terms of quality of sound, but DirectMusic doesn''t seem to support MP3 directly (correct me if I''m wrong). What would be the neatest (and cheapest) way to play MP3 music in my game? This is a just-for-fun project so I would prefer not to have to buy expensive decoder software. Thanks!
