How to start making music

I''ve been thinking about trying to do some music for a while, and I could use some tips. What software do you recommend? I got a tracker called ModPlug, and I''ve played around a bit with it. Anyone got any experince with that one? Is it any good? Also, I wonder if anyone can recommend a good place to get some free samples I can play around with?
