Boy, Java on Nokia's S60 plaform is certainly broken. In addition to crashing when getting a substring from a large string, it also crashes when playing some sounds, has broken graphics clipping logic, and leaks memory whenever you load an image.
Strangely enough, none of this stuff shows up on the more limited S30/S40 platforms. You'd think they would've spent a bit more time on their "premier" S60 (3650, 6600, N-Gage) platform, but it's just ugly the stuff I've gotta do to make it work.
Ugh, whatta mess.
