Six months ago Olivia came to the Albatross. She liked Le Mon the most because
he was funny. She didn't like Romaina because she was cold and intimidating.
She also resented Romaina because she was the only one that would make Le Mon
upset.

Romaina is unconscious. There is a tube that is keeping her alive.
Olivia is looking at that tube. Olivia feels ambivalent. She doesn't
like this feeling. She doesn't like a bit of it.

Romaina was spinning outside the wreckage. Her old self in armor ordered
her to drop the rifle. She saw it in her hand. She would not drop it because
if she did, everything they had done would be forgotten. It was the only
proof of their existence.

So she raised it at her. She pulled the trigger.

It was very dark. Romaina couldn't feel her body. There was a shadow
sitting at the end of the bed.

Who is it?

Romaina asked. She felt that the shadow was watching her, but it didn't
response. She couldn't tell whether she did ask the question, because
she couldn't feel her mouth. Romaina determinded that she was reduced to
an unrecoverable state. She asked the shadow whether it was the person
to euthanize her. The shadow didn't disagree.

How is everyone else?

Romaina asked. The shadow didn't say. It wouldn't make a difference to you,
now, would it?

The shadow stood up and reached forward.

Allisa's Notes

Allisa: What is the Albatross?

Cpt. Crouton: The Albatross is an atmospheric cruiser designed for
sustained flight and observation. It is the flagship of the resettlement
on Earth.

Allisa: What are the challenges of flying the Albatross?

Crouton: The Albatross is the largest atmospheric vessel ever built. It is
designed to hover and glide in low speed. Its size make it difficult to
change course, to land, and to take off. The weather must be closely
observed, to select landing locations and flight schedules to protect
the vessel.

Allisa: What experience did you have to prepare you for this task?

Crouton: I was trained under the Jupiter Exploration Fleet program. I
have been on the Albatross for 2 years prior to this operation. The
environment and characteristics of the vessels were different, there
was, and still is, a lot to learn about the Albatross from the old crew.

Allisa: What is the most distinctive feature you have learned since you
came to the Albatross?

Crouton: The most distinctive feature is the Albatross' use of the
environment to sustain its flight. This is very different from vessels
that use their own reactors and carry their own fuel. The autopilot
system of the Albatross could sustain its flight indefinitely in the
current climate on Earth. The autopilot detects and follows pockets
of adaquetly energized zones. The challenge arises when the Albatross
must deviate from those zones and budget its energy for the operation.

Allisa: What did you wish you knew before coming to the Albatross?

Crouton: I wish that I knew what it was like to pilot a sailing ship. I have
always heard the analogy between the Albatross and a sailing ship in
its relation between itself and the environment, but I have yet to
experience this analogy.

(Allisa's Notes)

Allisa: What is the relation between the Albatross and the police?

Parmesa: The police force had always used the Albatross to propel Falcons
back to space after they had entered Earth. It is the lighthouse and
reststop for the police. The police had also used the Albatross as the
base station for several search and interception operations.

Allisa: What other activities go on on the Albatross other than police work?

Parmesa: The Albatross hosts conferences and several research facilities.

Allisa: What researches are conducted on the Albatross?

Parmesa: Earth atmosphere and climate, high altitude plants, and
remote sensing and communication.

Allisa: What do you think of the Albatross's new role?

Parmesa: The agenda of the council to resettle on Earth is quite
aggressive. The Albatross would need to renew itself to adapt to this
new role. I am hopeful that this new congregation of scientists and
engineers would solve the technical problems as they arise.

On the Way to Norway

Crouton, Le Mon, and Worcester are on their way to Norway. They are
going along the east coast of North America then across the frozen
North of the Atlantic Ocean.

Every eight hours, they ram a communication tower into the ice. They use
the inverted towers to relay messages back to the base station at
Mexico City, where the messages are recovered from the ground and sent
to the Albatross. The Albatross is over the Caribbean Sea.

After a few days of installing the towers and worrying whether things
are working, Crouton, Le Mon, and Worcester realizes a problem:

There is nothing to do inside the Comet while it is on autopilot.

No one is used to having nothing to do.

What should they do?

1) Talk about politics
2) Talk about girls
3) Eat, drink, and play card games
4) Work out
5) Read
6) Sleep
7)

Allisa is a reporter. She keeps track of many things that happen on the Albatross.
One thing she tracks is what Olivia had learned. Sometimes she records it as she
observes. Sometimes she asks Olivia. These notes are not in chronological order.
The notes on Crouton and Parmesa were taken when Allisa first came to the Albatross.

Allisa's Notes about Olivia

When I came to the Albatross, Olivia was always asking questions. I imagined
that it would be very annoying but some how Captain Crouton is not annoyed. I
noticed that Olivia only ask three questions at a time. This was really odd.

"Why do you always ask three questions each time?" I asked Olivia.

"Mom said that people would get annoyed if I keep asking questions," said
Olivia, "I need to choose the ones I want to know the most."

"What happens to the questions that you don't get to ask?"

"I forget what they were."

"But for the questions you asked, you always write down the answers in your
notebook?"

"Yes."

"May I take a look of your notes?"

Olivia handed Allisa the notebook. Allisa flipped through the notebook,
there were drawings of the Albatross, diagrams of operations, formulas
on logistics, quotes of the crew members, and something Olivia write about
each person she knows. Allisa found the page about her:

"Tall reporter from the Colony with a bat on her shoulder. Ask questions,
wants to try things but also afraid to try. Likes to eat but eats very
little. Sleeps with mouth open..."

Hmmm... I sleep with my mouth open?

Then Allisa saw a page with a lot of curves and lines.

"What are these?" asked Allisa.

"That is Romaina jumping off from Atiel."

"How?"

"This line is the path Atiel flies. This is the building. When Atiel flies to here, Romaina flips over and falls towards the building. Then she flips again
just before she lands."

"When did you see this?"

"I saw it at the communication room."

Olivia and Allisa went to the communication room, where the engineers were
checking the buildings through the live feed from the flight crew as they
were assessing the buildings. Olivia got the screen from Romaina's headset.
It displays the panoramic view from her headset, but not Romaina herself.

Olivia has two diaries. Allisa saw the day diary.
Allisa doesn't know that Olivia has two.

An Empty Workshop

Worcester is on the Comet. Crista is in his room. Crista was used to
chatting with him late through the night when they needed to figure
out some plans for the next day's operation, or modifications for the
drones. In the last few weeks, he was spending all the time on the Comet,
and she on the gateway. Tools and rough sketches were scattered on the
bench, as if he had just stepped out for a moment.

Since she had come to the Albatross, they had talked less. Crista sees
the headset on the bench. Worcester used to wear it, and Crista would see
what he saw. She wondered what he was seeing now.
Under the Atlantic Ice Sheet

The Comet is skating across the Atlantic ocean.

When there is nothing to do, Crouton writes the log and sleeps.
Le Mon works out and then sleep.
Worcester dozes off listening to the sensors in headphones.

He dreamed about Crista. They were arguing at the workshop.
There was something about the headset, and he broke it.
That was all he remembered before he woke up to the beeping
noise from the radar.

There was something under the ice.

It couldn't be the seed vault.

It couldn't have drifted so much. Could it?

What could it be?
